The whole world has been devastated by this very serious crisis due to the
COVID-19 Pandemic. As Cardinal Thomas Collins rightly said: ‘We are going through the valley of tears.’
This challenging time has rapidly changed the daily rhythm of our lives. Many of us are confined to our homes and residences. We are unable to celebrate public prayer and Eucharist. Many feel helpless as they cannot visit the sick or meet and talk in person with friends and family. The works and plans for many have been disrupted. There is chaos and confusion.
In this time of concern, uncertainty and fear we might have two approaches:
putting our trust in God or
putting God to the test. As Catholics, we are blessed to have the gift of faith. I pray that we may all find the courage and strength to put our trust and hope in the Lord.
Many countries have taken strong measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Scientists and medical professionals are working very hard to find a cure that will bring this pandemic under control. Our Government, health authorities, and social media, are constantly reminding us to keep social distance. Let us adhere to our civil leaders as we join in solidarity with their every effort to flatten the curve.
While social and physical distancing is very hard, it is deemed to be very effective to stop the spread of the virus. So, let’s do our part. At the same time, we must remind ourselves that social distancing and physical distancing does not mean spiritual distancing. It is at times like this that we need to draw closer to God. I encourage everyone to look at this period of isolation as an opportunity to find new beginnings and new experiences. Take time for prayer and meditation in these days, utilizing internet and television resources for spiritual enrichment. Praying the rosary could be a great source of comfort and peace. And remember that ‘a family that prays together stays together.’

With this spiritual and physical shield of protection, let us entrust our parish family and the entire world to the intercession of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. For, ‘with Jesus there is plentiful redemption’ and ‘with Mary there is perpetual help.’
In conclusion, let’s keep our selfless doctors, nurses, volunteers, first responders and frontline workers in our prayer for the service they provide to us in this difficult time.
